    My ARI card expires before AIMA has processed the renewal. Can I still travel?

    The renewal was filed on time and I have the receipt. Will airlines and Schengen border checks accept the expired card with proof of the pending renewal?

    1. Once your residence card expires, it can no longer be used as a valid travel document to enter Portugal. If you need to travel to Portugal after the card has expired, you may need to obtain a visa to enter the country legally, unless you are a national of a country whose citizens are exempt from visa requirements for short stays in Portugal.

      To avoid this situation, you can start the renewal process up to three months before your residence card expires. Starting the process in advance is advisable to minimise the risk of travel difficulties resulting from an expired residence card.
