Italy's digital nomad and remote-worker route, set by the decree of 29 February 2024, lets non-EU nationals doing highly qualified work remotely enter on a long-stay visa and then hold a residence permit for up to one year, renewable annually. Annual income must be at least three times the minimum level for exemption from healthcare co-payments: about €24,789 a year, the figure published by the Italian Consulate General in New York, which is set by formula and updated (checked 26 Sep 2026).

Apply for the residence permit at the Questura of the province where you are within eight working days of entry, bringing the visa documents stamped by the consulate. The permit is marked "nomade digitale – lavoratore da remoto", lasts up to one year and is renewable annually while the conditions still apply.
The Questura generates your codice fiscale and notifies the Agenzia delle Entrate, INPS and INAIL. Self-employed digital nomads must also register for an Italian VAT number (partita IVA). The permit can be revoked if tax or social-contribution rules are breached.
