    Which Portuguese Route Fits You

    If your income is passive — pension, rental, dividends — the D7 is the usual fit. We anchor the D7's income expectation to the national minimum wage, €920 a month for 2026 (DGERT), and it is a genuine residence route: a temporary permit can be cancelled for absences over 6 consecutive or 8 non-consecutive months unless properly justified to AIMA (Lei 23/2007, art. 85).

    If you work remotely for foreign employers or clients, that points to the D8 instead. The D8's 2026 threshold is €3,680 a month for the main applicant — four times the minimum wage (MNE visa requirements), so roughly four times the D7 bar. Remote employment income is the usual boundary case between the two, and getting it wrong means refiling.

    If you want residence without relocating, the golden visa is the only route with a low presence obligation: 7 days in the first year and 14 days in each subsequent two-year period (Lei 23/2007, art. 90-A). It is also the slowest and most expensive — as of mid-2026, budget 12–24+ months to the first residence card (practitioner reports; AIMA publishes no official end-to-end average).

    Family reunification and nationality are separate files again. Family reunification depends on the sponsor's status (see the October 2025 changes below); naturalisation is 10 years for most foreign nationals, or 7 for EU and CPLP citizens, counted from when your residence permit was issued rather than from when you applied, and is filed through IRN rather than AIMA (Lei Orgânica 1/2026).

    What Changed for Families and Job Seekers in October 2025?

    Lei 61/2025, in force since 23 October 2025, amended the foreigners law. Family reunification now requires the sponsor to have held a valid residence permit for at least two years, or 15 months for a spouse who lived with the sponsor for at least 18 months before the sponsor came to Portugal.

    The wait does not apply to minor or incapable dependent children, to a spouse who is the parent of such a child, or to the families of golden visa (ARI), highly qualified and EU Blue Card holders. AIMA must decide a family reunification request within nine months.

    The old job-seeker visa is now a visa to seek qualified work, for people with specialised technical skills. Under art. 57-A of Lei 23/2007 it lasts 120 days, extendable by 60, and includes an AIMA appointment within its validity; if you start work in that time you can apply for a residence permit, and if not you must leave and wait a year before applying again. It is not yet available: the Portuguese visa portal says consulates are waiting for the regulations under article 57-A (checked 26 Sep 2026).

    What the Choice Actually Turns On

    Most cases come down to how much time you will actually spend in Portugal, where your income comes from, and whether you are investing at all. A firm that asks those before quoting is doing the job; one that leads with a product is selling.

    The costly mistake is picking a route on headline price. The golden visa's AIMA fees alone are €6,314.20 for the concession plus €632.10 for the analysis — €6,946.30 per applicant (AIMA fee table, updated 26 February 2026). Government fees are charged per person, so a family of four pays about €27,785 before the investment itself. What the golden visa asks little of is your time; the D7 costs far less and asks you to move.

    AIMA and Document Risk

    Portugal delays often come from appointment scarcity, document validity, translation or apostille issues, and mismatches between the investment, tax and residence file. Ask who monitors renewals and family-member applications after the first submission.

    Ask which route they intend to file and why, before you pay anything. Confirm the specific lawyer with the Ordem dos Advogados, get fees itemised separately from government fees, translations and apostilles, and establish who owns the file at renewal.     Is there still a job-seeker visa for Portugal?

    Not yet in practice.
