Portugal Golden Visa Source of Funds
Source of funds is where Portugal golden visa files actually slow down. Not because a rule lists exactly which documents prove clean money, but because three different institutions check it at three different moments, each under its own obligations. This page maps who asks what, and when, so the file is assembled once, before the money moves.
Three checkpoints, three different gatekeepers
The bank, when you open the account and receive the transfer
Portuguese banks are obliged entities under Lei 83/2017, supervised by the Banco de Portugal. Their identification and diligence duties include obtaining information on the origin of the funds moved, and the diligence deepens for higher-risk profiles, which golden-visa applicants often are simply by being new, non-resident and moving a large sum. The bank is also the institution that later issues the declaration AIMA requires, attesting the effective transfer of the qualifying amount, so satisfying the bank is not a side quest. It is on the critical path.
The fund manager and depositary, when you subscribe
Management companies of Portuguese funds run their own customer due diligence under the same law, within the CMVM's supervisory perimeter (CMVM Regulation 2/2020 sets their AML duties). The depositary holding the fund's assets is usually itself a bank, with its AML duties supervised by the Banco de Portugal. Subscription paperwork typically asks you to declare the source of the invested funds and to evidence it. This is a second, independent review: passing the bank does not pre-clear the fund.
AIMA, when you file the application
AIMA's own document lists ask for the outputs of the checks above rather than the raw file: the bank's declaration of the effective transfer, your tax standing, and criminal records. The deep source-of-funds file usually lives with the bank and the fund manager, but inconsistencies between what they saw and what the application says are exactly the kind of thing that stalls a file.
The legal basis for the first two checkpoints is Lei 83/2017, Portugal's anti-money-laundering law, supervised for banks by the Banco de Portugal and for fund managers under CMVM Regulation 2/2020. AIMA's own document requirements are on the documents checklist.
Source of funds and source of wealth are different questions
Source of funds asks where this specific money came from: which sale, which account, which distribution. Source of wealth asks how you built your position overall. Institutions can pursue both, and on larger files they usually do. The practical consequence: a clean transaction trail for the qualifying amount is necessary but not always sufficient, and a file that also tells a coherent wealth story in two paragraphs and a handful of documents moves faster than one that answers only the narrow question.
What institutions commonly request, by origin of the money
There is no statutory evidence list: each institution sets its own, risk-based. The pairings below are what banks and fund managers commonly request. Treat them as the starting point your lawyer refines, not as a guarantee of sufficiency:
| Where the money came from | Commonly requested evidence |
|---|---|
| Sale of a business or property | Sale contract or deed, completion statement, and the bank credit matching the proceeds. |
| Employment income and savings | Employment contract or letters, payslips or tax returns across the accumulation period, and account statements showing the build-up. |
| Dividends or company profits | Company accounts, dividend resolutions or distribution records, and the corresponding credits. |
| Inheritance or gift | The will, deed or gift documentation, plus, for gifts, institutions commonly also ask about the donor's own source of funds. |
| Investment gains, including crypto | Purchase and sale records, account or exchange statements showing the trail from acquisition to the transferred amount. Institutions differ widely in how they treat crypto-origin funds; a complete exchange trail is the difference between slow and impossible. |
What actually slows files down
- Funds arriving from an account that is not in your name, or through third parties.
- A transfer routed through a country or institution the bank treats as higher risk.
- Gifts without a deed, or with an undocumented donor.
- Documents in a language the institution will not accept without certified translation.
- A gap between the story the paperwork tells and the amounts, dates or names on the transfers.
None of these is fatal by definition. All of them are cheaper to fix before the transfer than after, which is why the sequencing question, what moves when, and from which account, belongs in the first conversation with your lawyer and bank, not the last.
Five questions to settle before any money moves
- Which account will the qualifying amount leave from, and is it in my name?
- What does this specific bank want to see for my origin of funds, in writing?
- Does the fund manager have its own evidence list, and does it differ from the bank's?
- Which documents need certified translation, and how long will that take?
- Who assembles and keeps the master evidence file, and who answers follow-up questions?

Frequently asked questions
Does AIMA check the source of funds for the Golden Visa?
AIMA's document lists require the outputs of the checks rather than the raw evidence file: a declaration from a Portuguese-supervised bank attesting the effective transfer of the qualifying amount, plus your tax standing and criminal records. The detailed source-of-funds review is performed by the bank when you open the account and receive the money, and again by the fund manager and depositary when you subscribe, under Lei 83/2017.
What is the difference between source of funds and source of wealth?
Source of funds is where this specific money came from: the sale, the salary account, the dividend. Source of wealth is how you built your overall position over time. Institutions can ask about both, and for larger or higher-risk files they usually do. Preparing the specific transaction trail plus a coherent picture of the wider wealth is what a well-assembled file looks like.
Can I use gifted money for the Portugal Golden Visa?
There is no rule against gifted funds in AIMA's lists, but the receiving institutions apply their own risk-based diligence, and gifts are commonly the hardest origin to evidence: institutions typically ask for gift documentation and for information about the donor's own source of funds. Whether a particular gift is accepted is the institution's decision on its own risk policy, which is a question to put to the bank and your lawyer before money moves.
Do the funds have to come from outside Portugal?
AIMA's per-route document lists require a declaration from a credit institution attesting the effective transfer of the qualifying amount, and for the fund route they state the investment must result from an international transfer of capital. The mechanics of when and how the money should arrive are exactly what your lawyer and bank should sequence before you wire anything.
Why did my bank ask for more documents than the AIMA list?
Because it is running a different check under a different law. Lei 83/2017 obliges banks to identify customers and obtain information on the origin of funds on a risk-sensitive basis, and each bank sets its own evidence expectations. The AIMA document list is the immigration file; the bank's request list is the anti-money-laundering file. They overlap but are not the same thing.
Disclaimer. This page is general information, not legal advice, and it does not assess any person's funds or situation. Anti-money-laundering diligence is risk-based and institution-specific under Lei 83/2017; evidence lists here are labelled as commonly requested precisely because there is no single statutory list, and each bank, management company and depositary decides its own requirements. AIMA's document requirements follow its official per-route lists. Take the specifics to a licensed Portuguese immigration lawyer and to the receiving institutions before moving any money.
