Do I become a Portuguese tax resident just by holding a golden visa?

Holding a Golden Visa residence card does not automatically make you a Portuguese tax resident.
You will become a Portuguese tax resident if you choose to establish your tax residence in Portugal, including by changing your registered tax address to a Portuguese address, and/or if you spend more than 183 days in Portugal during a calendar year. In that case, the relevant circumstances should be disclosed to the Portuguese Tax Authority and your tax status updated accordingly.
However, if you maintain your Golden Visa while only complying with the programme’s minimum physical presence requirements, namely seven days during the first year and 14 days during each subsequent two-year period, you will not become a Portuguese tax resident merely by holding the Golden Visa residence card.
